Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka was left irked by the empty stands during the Davis Cup match between Switzerland and France in Manchester. The 38-year-old vented out his frustration at the organizers by posting the video of the vacant seats all around. Interestingly, Wawrinka tagged footballing icon Gerard Pique in his post but only to get a cold reply from Pique.
The Spaniard shared a picture showing the number of spectators at last year’s Davis Cup. Pique then asked Wawrinka to compare it for himself and also clarified that he does not organize the tournament anymore and suggested that Wawrinka questions the people who are actually accountable.
“Last year attendance in the group stage. You can compare it for yourself @stanwawrinka. We don’t organize it anymore. Ask the @ITFTennis…” wrote Pique while sharing a screenshot of the post shared by Davis Cup’s official handle last year.

Notably, it was announced in 2018 that Kosmos, owned by Pique would partner with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to run the Davis Cup for the next 25 years. However, the deal was cut short with ITF announcing earlier this year that the deal had concluded.
Stan Wawrinka asks why Gerard Pique’s cut the deal short

Although Gerard Pique gave a cold reply, Stan Wawrinka took it in good humor and said it made him laugh after a tough day on the court. The Swiss then questioned why the 25-year deal was cut short to just five years. “After a bad day on court this at least made me laugh! It would be great to understand more if it was such a success last year, why the 25 years deal stopped after 5 years …,” asked Wawrinka.
Gerard Pique, meanwhile, did not give a clear response saying the matter is still up for hearing. “We still don’t know… let’s see what the judge says. Good luck the rest of the week,” replied Pique.

While Pique saved himself here by stating that they do not organize the tournament anymore, it cannot be ignored that the idea of moving away from ‘home and away’ ties and hosting the tournament in one city was implemented when the Kosmos-ITF partnership was still alive. Ever since that move, the footfall at the stadiums has gone down significantly.
