“Stan Wawrinka is far from it” Swiss legend Marc Rosset not yet assured of his compatriot’s ability to win another major

3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka finally returned to the Tour after a year-long absence having injured his left foot in the 2021 season. His season ended in March after his 1st-round defeat in the Doha Open. Missing the entire season due to the surgery, Wawrinka fell massively in the rankings and is currently ranked 236th in the world.
Wawrinka finally returned to action, first at the Marbella Challenger and then accepted a wildcard at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters but faced first-round exits in both events. While his game was certainly good and had the occasional glimpses of the peak Wawrinka, the same could not be said of his fitness.
Noting the changes in his game and physical fitness while playing on the Tour, Swiss legend and Wawrinka’s former Doubles partner Marc Rosset gave his opinions on whether his former partner can be successful once again on the Tour and challenge for the big titles.
“It’s good to see him again! I closely followed his first round in Monte‐Carlo against Bublik. It wasn’t bad, but Stan logically ran out of “gas” and collapsed in the 3rd set. I could say that what he showed is promising, but it also depends on his end goal. If it is a question of finding a good level, it will go quickly and therefore we can be reassured by his last performance. If it is a question of “slamming a big thing”, then it is still very far from it. It needs patience,” said Rosset about the 37-year old Stan during his conversation with RTS.
Stan Wawrinka absent from the Tour after Monte-Carlo appearance
After the early exit from Monte-Carlo, Wawrinka will not be playing in the next week where two events will be played simultaneously. The ATP-250 Serbian Open 2022 in Belgrade and the ATP-500 Barcelona Open 2022 will be held in the week from 18th April to 24th April. Wawrinka will not be present in either of the events, however.
The decision is believed to be based on his fitness to see how well is he recovering as his biggest motivation remains the 2022 French Open and the former champion won’t be risking his fitness for the Grand Slam.
