Stan Wawrinka recently suffered an injury during his round-of-16 match against Luca Van Assche in the Metz Open and was forced to retire from the match. It was unfortunate, as Warinka was really playing well and would have probably won the match had it not been for the injury.

The Swiss player took to Twitter today to give his fans an update about his injury and assure them that he will be back on the court soon. He posted two pictures of him and his plastered leg.

The injury ended Stan Wawrinka’s season as he will not be able to return to the court by the end of the year. However, the Swiss will probably be able to recover on time for the 2024 Australian Open. Stan Wawrinka is 38 years old now and he is currently in the twilight of his career. Thus, injuries like this have a drastic effect on him as firstly, he is not young anymore and secondly, he does not have many more years left in his career.

Stan Wawrinka has been suffering from poor form for quite some time now. He lost in the very first round of the 2023 Paris Masters against Dominic Thiem and the Swiss Indoors against Alexander Shevchenko. His performance in the Metz Open was comparatively better as he ousted Bernabe Zapata 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. Unfortunately, he had to walk over from the second match despite being in a winning position.

Stan Wawrinka’s season at a glance

Stan Wawrinka had a net positive campaign in 2023 despite not being able to win any singles title. He played 48 matches in total this season and lost 22 out of them. However, there has been an improvement in his rankings. Stan Wawrinka started the season as World No. 48. It is now confirmed that he will end the year as a Top-50 player.

Wawrinka also made it to his first final in the last four years in the Croatia Open this year. He lost the final against Alexei Popyrin 7-6(5), 3-6, 4-6 despite winning the first set. Yet, it was one of his biggest achievements of the season. Apart from that, he reached the quarterfinals of the French Open. Apart from that, it was a pretty average season for him.
