Swiss tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka suffered heartbreak as the 38-year-old was forced to retire and he missed out on a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals at the Moselle Open. Wawrinka had a chance to make it into the last eight as he faced World No.70 Luca Van Assche. The Swiss started well, claiming the first set 6-3.

Wawrinka was a match point up when he twisted his ankle which led to his retirement. The 38-year-looked in a lot of pain and could not continue. Wawrinka looked gutted as he walked off the court.

The 38-year-old rolled his right ankle when he was returning a shot. Wawrinka landed awkwardly and then could not recover. Eventually, he had to walk off the court and Van Assche was declared the winner.

2023 season ends with heartbreak for Stan Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka had a weird season where he failed to win any singles title and lost 22 out of the 48 matches played. While the Swiss veteran started his season with a win over Alexander Bublik in the group stage, his season ended with a heartbreak.

The 38-year-old took part in all four Grand Slams but only to go as far as the third round. Wawrinka had a first-round exit at the Australian Open. The Swiss made some progress till the French Open, making two quarterfinals, in Rotterdam and Marseille. Wawrinka also survived till the third round at the Indian Wells before going down to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

In the next three ATP 1000 events leading into the French Open- Monaco, Rome, and Madrid Wawrinka had a second-round exit. At the year’s second Grand Slam event, the Swiss ace made it to the second round but only to get knocked out after a defeat to Thanasi Kokkiknakis. Nonetheless, Wawrinka made it to the third round at Wimbledon before going down to Novak Djokovic.

At the year’s last Grand Slam- 2023 US Open he lost to Jannik Sinner in the third round but not before giving his opponent a hard time. He won two sets against Sinner. In the subsequent tournaments, the schedule seemed to take a toll on Wawrinka who had four first-round exits. Now, at the season’s last event, he would have hoped for a title. But this injury forced him to retire and end the season without a title.
