Swiss tennis professional Stan Wawrinka has started the 2023 season at the United Cup in Australia. He recorded the first win for his team defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik by 6-3, 7-6(3). Playing for his team and recording a victory has made Wawrinka very satisfied as he said after the tie.

Appearing in the post-match press conference, Wawrinka shared his thoughts about the feeling after the win. Wawrinka also touched upon his ability to bounce back after multiple injuries over the years. On the possibility of winning a Slam after the injury, Wawrinka said not everyone can be compared with Nadal and Federer.

“I think it is impossible to compare Roger and Rafa with the rest of the players, we are all different,” Wawrinka said. “In my case, I had my first big operation in 2017 and I was back in the top 20. I played at a very high level and I was very happy about it,” he further added.

Wawrinka also touched upon the age factor. “I am already 37 years old, 38 next year. I don’t rejuvenate. It’s more difficult,”, he expressed. On his future plans, he said he will continue as long as he enjoys it. “I think I still have good results in me, I can win tours and I hope to do it next season. I’m not sure about the level of the tournament, but as long as I enjoy it, I will continue,” Wawrinka elaborated on his point.

Stan Wawrinka’s career in a glance, injuries, and hopes from the 2023 season

Stan Wawrinka

The Swiss professional Stan Wawrinka is some of the late-blooming players on the Tour. In the dominating era of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, Wawrinka was successful in carving out a space for himself. The major highlights of his career include his three Grand Slam titles win, coming after defeating the world No. 1 player in the final on all three occasions.

Wawrinka’s career has been mired by injuries. In early 2021 he suffered a foot injury and had gone through a couple of operations that year. Before that, in 2017, he suffered damage to his knee and had to miss the 2017 season after Wimbledon. The impact of injuries has been reflected in his career.

Despite being intermittently away from the court, Wawrinka established himself as a successful tennis star. His backhand is described by John McEnroe as “the best one-handed backhand in the game”. As Wawrinka is feeling the pressure of age now, he would be hoping to enjoy the game as much as he can in the 2023 season starting at the United Cup.
