World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas and World No. 45 Nick Kyrgios were involved in a heated and controversial clash during their 3rd round match at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The match was eventually won by Kyrgios in 4-sets after a battle of more than 3 hours, but it had everything present to make it an instant classic.

Apart from the drama and quarrels, the match also had some brilliant shot makings which were overshadowed due to the on-court and off-court behaviour of the two players. Stef was found hitting the ball deliberately towards the stands which narrowly missed a spectator or it would have been a very bad injury for the person. Kyrgios had demanded a new chair umpire after Nick demanded Stef be defaulted for hitting the ball so dangerously and later smacked one out of the court as well.

Nick‘s refusal to play till other officials were called, made him a recipient of the fine while Stefanos actions were enough to get him fined as much as Kyrgios was fined in the first round for spitting towards a section of fans who Nick claimed to be racially abusing him during the match. Stef later admitted in his press conference that he was aiming for Kyrgios’ body calling him a ‘manipulative evil bully‘.

Stef will be paying a fine of $10,000 while Kyrgios will $4,000 more to his fine of the first round making his total fine so far in his three matches to $14,000. While Kyrgios is yet to play in his 4th round match, he can certainly add additional fines if his antics are not in control during his Center Court debut for the year when he takes on Brandon Nakashima to reach his second Wimbledon quarter-final and his first since his debut in 2014.
