The Greek ace, Stefanos Tsitsipas, has had a disappointing season this year after the World No. 6 failed to win a single major this year. Thanks to the format of the NextGEN ATP Finals, with just the title at Los Cabos under his belt, Tsitsipas still managed to claim a spot as one of the eight players for the exclusive event.
The 25-year-old player has been struggling to prove his mettle since the beginning of this year. In the recently concluded Paris Masters event, Tsitsipas made it to the Final Four as the seventh seed. He, however, lost the semi-finals to Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in an epic showdown over three sets.
The ATP Finals are scheduled to begin later this week on Sunday in Italy’s Turin. Tsitsipas recently became the subject of a debate after he made a controversial statement regarding the importance of an ATP Finals trophy. According to Tsitsipas, winning the ATP Finals is ‘bigger than’ winning a Grand Slam title, as the 2019 champion gears up to play the year-end tournament once again. He said:
We all gather together and we get to play against each other and focus on the fact that we are the best in the world trying to fight for this mega trophy, which is a grand prize in our sport. It means a lot. I would consider it probably a bigger thing than a Slam, honestly.
The tennis fans were taken aback in awe by the 2019 ATP Finals winner’s claims. Numerous people from the tennis world took to the social media platform X as they dragged Tsitsipas for his controversial claim.

Stefanos Tsitsipas won a single title in 2023 at the ATP 250 event in Los Cabos, Mexico, back in August. While fans of the player hope that the 2019 champion might win another title this season, many in the tennis world expressed their disagreements with the Greek’s claims.
Tsitsipas holds onto the belief that one of the top eight players, crowned champion at the ATP Finals, is regarded as the champion of the whole season. Netizens online, however, agreed to disagree with the player, eliciting a plethora of reactions online.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions, here’s what fans have to say:
Several users on the social media platform X dragged Tsitsipas as they questioned the validity of his statement. Users wondered if the 25-year-old was trying to cope with the grief of not winning a single event with his self-proclaimed statement.
Fans even brought 22-time Grand Slam title winner Rafael Nadal into the discussion. “Rafa strongly disagrees,” a user stated. The Spanish tennis icon has claimed zero wins in the ATP Finals. Tsitsipas, on the other hand, has won the title once.
