World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, regarded as one of the next-generation tennis stars, has been going through a tough time for the last few months. He has not made it to the later stages of the majority of the competitions he has participated in. After training hard for the last few weeks, he was pumped up and looked really confident for Wimbledon.
However, unfortunately, his determination was short-lived, as he got knocked out right in the fourth round. Stefanos had an interview with SDNA after his loss to Christopher Eubanks and was asked a couple of hard questions about what has gone wrong for him lately.
Notably, Stefanos got a bit emotional during the interview and expressed how difficult these past few months have been for him. He said, “I said the other day that there had been some difficult times recently, times when I didn’t enjoy tennis, and the truth is that when the match against Thiem was stopped on the first day, I was very badly mentally. I think this is the worst state I’ve been in for the past few months. I didn’t even want to be on the court.”
From not wanting to play tennis anymore to lasting nearly two weeks in the competition, he further talked about how much he has improved mentally. That’s not all; the tennis professional even opened up about how he is proud of himself even if he loses.
He continued, “Against Thiem, the victory seemed very empty to me when I did this winning passing, I felt no joy, no emotion, and it was very strange. The match that really got me going is the one against Murray. It’s as if I was reborn as if I rediscovered myself through a match.”
Where does Stefanos Tsitsipas go on from here?
Tsitsipas needs to put his focus in the right place if he is to make things better. The Greek star has been going through a purple patch, and it’s tough for a player of his stature to accept defeat even after working day in and day out. After an impressive start to the year at the Australian Open, where he made it to the finals, he has since lost himself.
Stefanos has since then just played one more final out of the 11 competitions he has participated in which has left his fans disappointed. With still a lot of time on his side, Stefanos will be adamant to finish the year on a high and try to win a title as soon as possible to prove all his critics wrong. He is a wonderful talent and has one of the best services in the game and it simply doesn’t do justice to see a player like him suffer in court due to mental health problems.
