Day 3 at the National Bank Open in Toronto saw a dream match-up between Gael Monfils and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek held the age advantage over the 36-year-old Frenchman, but Monfils was here to defy the odds. He not only beat Tsitsipas but also did it in fine fashion with a high degree of comfort, wrapping up the contest 6-4, 6-3, in a little more than an hour.

Both players battled it out in their Round of 32 match, and Tsitsipas was the clear favorite at the start of the contest. Especially after winning the Los Cabos event last week, he certainly came in with confidence on his side. However, Monfils was hitting the ball extremely well. One of the forehands was hit at 188 kmph. There were signs of a vintage Gael Monfils performance, and his fans would hope that he continued this excellent form.

Tsitsipas recently parted ways with his father as coach, and it hasn’t really had a great result. He did win the Los Cabos Open; however, he didn’t face the same level of competition that he faced in a Master’s 1000 event in Toronto. Fans have attacked the Greek on social media and blamed his coaching decision as one of the prime reasons for his loss.

Tennis fans on social media have constantly attacked Stefanos Tsitsipas for his loss against Gael Monfils. They clearly believed that Tsitsipas, who is in the prime of his career, should have easily been able to overcome an injury-prone 36-year-old Monfils. However, that not happening has made fans blame Tsitsipas for his decision to part ways with his father. They also blamed his partner, Paula Badosa, for his failure.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

Tsitsipas will like to treat this like a one-off loss and move on to the Cincinnati Masters with confidence of winning in Los Cabos. He has been patchy this year, but he hasn’t played that badly. The tennis professional would like to draw inspiration from the fact that he has a great chance to defy the odds in New York at the US Open. With that being said, can the Greek ace finally win a Grand Slam?
