Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem played the ‘Popcorn match of the night’ in the Madrid Open. Tsitsipas delivered his absolute best as he won the match in a third-set tie-breaker. At the net, both the players were nothing but full of appreciation for each other.
The World No.5 made a perfect comeback and sealed the victory with 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5). He made 39 straight first serves and won 88 percent of his overall first serve points, in a battle which lastest two-hour, nineteen-minutes.
“That’s fantastic, 39 is a lot. That shows that perhaps I improved today on my serve. That’s a positive mark for me. I think I just owe it all to fluidity and just being relaxed on my serve… I think it’s just pure relaxation and focus,” he said after the match.
The 29-year-old Thiem also delivered promising tennis but fell short of the Greek’s resilient performance. This was their first meeting since Nitto ATP Finals 2020 and the scoreboard stands 4-5 in their ATP head-to-head.
” It was very physical and I think we both played our best. I’m in a way happy that we were able to show that kind of tennis. Today sort of showed what kind of intensity two guys that play single-hand backhands can bring to tennis. I am happy I got away with a win. Things weren’t easy at the very end but I just kept fighting,” he stated at the press conference.
Tsitsipas will next face the 25th seed Sebastian Baez, who defeated Marcos Giron in a three-set match(3-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Stefanos Tsitsipas, an expected contender for Roland Garros 2023
Stefanos Tsitsipas is expected to claim the title, which he lost in 2021, to Novak Djokovic in five sets. Last year, he was shown an early exit in the fourth round by Holger Rune. The Australian Open finalist will be looking forward to another Grand Slam appearance.
In the Miami Open, he was outperformed by Karen Khachanov in round of 16. The Greek’s run in the Monte Carlo Masters was also cut short by Taylor Fritz in his straight-sets victory. The World No.5 faced another tough loss after losing the Barcelona Open final to Carlos Alcaraz.
With powerful players like Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and Jannik Sinner, in the line for the title, the competition is going to be entertaining. The World No.5, with his composed and versatile style of game on clay, is anticipated to achieve a Grand Slam title.
