German tennis ace Alexander Zverev‘s serving on the ATP Players’ Council despite facing a conviction in a domestic violence case has created a furor among the fans.
Meanwhile, the authorities as well as Zverev’s fellow players on the tour have decided to keep mum on the matter. Stefanos Tstisipas became the latest to join the mum group.
The Greek decided to stay quiet on the matter when he was asked about it in a press conference ahead of his second-round match at the 2024 Australian Open. Tsitsipas was informed that Zverev will be facing a trial in May and was asked if it is appropriate for him to serve on the Players’ Council until he is cleared of the charges.
Tistipas denied making any comments. The Greek said that, as he is not aware of the complete situation, it would not be ideal for him to comment on the matter.
I will not say on that. I don't know the situation. I'm completely unfamiliar with it. I have nothing to comment on it.Stefanos Tsitsipas said.
Alexander Zverev shuts down the reporter when queried about the case
While Stefanos Tsitsipas denied commenting on the matter, Alexander Zverev did not hold back when he was asked the same question, most probably by the same reporter.
The German shut down the reporter saying no one had a problem other than journalists who wanted clicks on their stories.
When Zverev was asked if it was appropriate for him to continue on the Players’ Council when a trial was due, the German ace cross-questioned why it was inappropriate.
The journalist said that many feel that he should not even play. Zverev was quick to respond that it was an agenda run by some journalists merely for clicks.
Why would it not be (appropriate)? There is no (question mark). I think so (I have confidence of fellow players). No one has said anything to me so I don't have any reason to not believe that. Like who (believes that he should be playing at all)? Some journalists who are interested in writing about the story for clicks instead of knowing the actual truth.Alexander Zverev said.
It is worth mentioning that Zverev was asked by a Berlin court to pay fines amounting to 450,000 euros ($493,000).
However, Zverev contested the decision and hence will be appearing for a trial in May. The player would not have to be present in person though. He can be represented by a lawyer.
