Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the 24-year-old Greek professional, is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world currently. Tsitsipas reached the final of the 2023 Australian Open after his excellent performances at the tournament. He, however, fell short of winning the coveted trophy, as Novak Djokovic proved to be too strong of an opponent for him.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was visibly heartbroken after the match. Having lost yet another Grand Slam final, being disappointed over it is justified for the Greek professional. Tsitsipas however, has not lost hope yet. After losing the title, he recognized Novak Djokovic’s greatness and talked about how he is going to continue playing for the big titles and keep giving it his all.

In his post-match press conference, Stefano Tsitsipas said, “I want to max out in what I do in my profession. No. 1 is on my mind. It doesn’t come easy, I know that. I got to work harder to make that happen. Today was my opportunity to be a world No. 1. I had a better opponent on the other side of the net who did things much better than me. He deserves that spot currently. It’s my time to aim for something like this. I don’t see any reason to be lowering my expectations or my goals. I am born a champion. I can feel it in my blood. I can feel it as the competitive kid that I was when I was young. It’s something that is within me. I want to harvest that, make it bloom, make it even stronger and fonder, and work hard towards those goals. It’s that beautiful number, the number ‘1’, that will make things extremely emotional when converting that.

Stefanos Tsitsipas talks about what went wrong for him at the Australian Open final

Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas played through an excellent Australian Open. The Greek professional truly gave it his all as he beat the likes of Jannik Sinner, Karen Kachanov, and Hijikata to make his way into the final of the tournament. He was however unable to beat Novak Djokovic in the penultimate match of the tournament which costed him his first Grand Slam title.

Talking about the match against Djokovic, Tsitsipas said, “I had trouble getting ahold of my serve in the beginning, which was noticeable. I wouldn’t say I was nervous. I was excited actually to be out on the court, getting an opportunity to fight for that No. 1 spot tonight. I was really looking forward to the game, giving myself a good chance out there. There are definitely things that I can improve and get better at, given the circumstances today. But I don’t think there’s any reason for me to be affected by today’s loss. It is a step forward. I’m looking forward to scoring more points during this season, making bigger results, fighting for bigger trophies.

Tsitsipas ceratinly looks hopeful even after a devastating loss to Novak Djokovic. The Serb dominated Tsitsipas throughout the match as he beat him in straight sets. Even though Tsitsipas was in excellent coming into the match, it still wasn’t enough to make it past Djokovic.
