“Steffi Graf should have an asterisk to her name” – Chris Evert rekindles violent GOAT debate on Twitter as fans suggest Monica Seles’ stabbing paved way for the German
Monica Seles and Steffi Graf
Tennis great Chris Evert rekindled the GOAT debate on Twitter, proclaiming Steffi Graf as the greatest of all time on the occasion of her 34th Golden Slam anniversary. Graf is the only player, male or female, to have won all the four Grand Slams and the Olympics Gold Medal in the same year, in 1988.
However, many tennis fans on Twitter had different opinions, with some suggesting Graf was greatly helped by Monica Seles’ injury due to a fan stabbing mid-match, while others held 41-year-old Serena Williams in higher esteem.
Graf retired with 22 Grand Slam singles titles to her name. Serena retired from the sport only recently at the 2022 US Open, winning 23 major singles titles to date.
Some fans also threw Martina Navratilova’s name in the mix, who won 18 major singles titles and 31 GS doubles titles.
Nick Kyrgios picks Serena Williams ahead of Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova
Recently, Australian ATP player Nick Kyrgios said Serena was better than both Graf and Navratilova.
“I’d say, Serena, no? Who do you think?” said Kyrgios answering the journalist’s question who responded with the names of Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Margaret Court to draw up more comparisons from the Australian in the discussion but Nick kept it short and said, “There’s so much I want to say, but I’m just going to say, Serena, yeah.”
Kyrgios has been respectful toward Serena always and considering the statistics between the players mentioned by the journalists, one could always pick Serena who has won 23 Grand Slam titles over her glorious career all coming in the Open Era. With only Court ahead of Serena with 24 majors won in both Amateur and Open Era, Serena is often considered the GOAT and Nick’s reply is just in line with that.
However, with Nick reserving himself from further comments, it could certainly be a big thing to ponder upon as the Australian rarely ever holds himself back from speaking his heart out.
