“Stop tearing women’s tennis,” Twitter lashes out on WTA for their wrongdoings at Madrid Open Final
Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur
Ons Jabeur, the No. 8 seed from Tunisia, won the Mutua Madrid Open for the first time on Saturday, defeating No. 12 seed Jessica Pegula 7-5, 0-6, 6-3. It was her first WTA 1000 championship. Before gritting her way to a topsy-turvy 1-hour and 54-minute triumph over Pegula, Jabeur escaped both a set point in the first set and a second-set bagel. The 10th-ranked Jabeur wins her second career triumph after being the first Arab woman to win a Hologic WTA Tour singles tournament last year in Birmingham. With this win, Ons Jabeur also became the first African player to win a WTA 1000 tournament.
Despite all of the milestones she set, the match was a bit controversial. Many factors contributed to the issue, the most significant of which was the stadium is nearly empty in comparison to the men’s semifinal between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, which took place before this match. In addition, the women’s final has always been played before the men’s semifinals and final in every tennis competition. The women’s semis are usually held on Thursday, followed by the finals on Saturday. However, things appeared to take a dramatic turn in this encounter, with the men’s singles semifinals taking place before the women’s final. According to fans, these are all part of the WTA’s wrongdoings, and the WTA does not adequately promote women’s tennis.
Fans on Twitter slam WTA for their deeds
The Women’s Tennis Association was criticised on Twitter by fans for their wrongdoings. According to some of them, the match was deliberately postponed in order to give the Djokovic-Alcaraz match more attention. Some even went so far as to declare that the WTA is irresponsible and does not adequately promote women’s tennis, whilst others claimed that women’s tennis is simply monotonous.
