21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will be keeping his fingers crossed for the next 5 weeks as his fate of participating in the 2022 US Open continues to hang by a thread. The Serbian has decided to remain unvaccinated and is ready to miss the Grand Slam if he is not permitted but he still has a hope that with declining cases in the USA, he might be allowed to come in and play.
After a long wait, the US government finally relaxed their borders for foreigners without requiring proof of a negative RT-PCR test but those wishing to enter need to show proof of vaccination nevertheless. However, with the new policy, Djokovic remains ineligible to enter the country and it will see him miss the entire month of August with only one ATP-250 event in Mexico available for him to play as the Canadian Masters will also require him to be vaccinated.

With US President Joe Biden testing positive for Covid on Thursday, 21st July, the policy in the USA not allowing unvaccinated foreigners has come under scrutiny once again as Biden had been double jabbed against the virus. American player Tennys Sandgren, who remains unvaccinated, had also called out the government as he is eligible to play the Grand Slam but Djokovic is not.
Amidst all this drama, a now-viral video shows Biden removing his mask to cough during an interview which further infuriated Djokovic’s supporters and the opposers of the current policy with regard to foreigners entering the USA. The video was shared by Avi Yemini, Chief of Rebel News Australia and captioned it, “Who’s a bigger threat to America? Joe Biden: A sick man who removes his mask to cough. OR Novak Djokovic: An elite athlete.” The video has since then gotten a lot of reactions.
