Roger Federer, the former world number one, is likely to make his comeback to the court after more than a year at the Laver Cup in the team Europe who will be fighting for their fifth title. He is one of the greatest players of all time and has been quite dominant in the past two decades.

Federer has been missing in action since the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2021 where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz followed by a knee injury and rehabilitation that kept him out for months. He hasn’t played a single match in the past year due to which he saw a major setback dropping out of the Top 50 rankings for the first time since May 2000. This is the first instance in the 25years Federer has dropped out of the ATP rankings since he started playing in 1997.

The Swiss maestro has clinched 103 ATP titles in the Open era including 20 singles Grand Slam titles and is also a silver medallist at London Olympics. On the 100th-anniversary celebration event of the Centre Court at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship, the 8-time Wimbledon champion expressed his desire to come back next year to play if things go well.

Federer is officially confirmed to participate at the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament, an ATP 500 event in his home country that starts on October 24. The Tournament Director Brennwald confirmed the same stating that they are waiting for the complete entry list that will be out in a few weeks’ time. He said “Thanks to the protected ranking, Federer and Wawrinka both compete in Basel without a wildcard. The complete entry list will be known in about two weeks. Two wildcards are still up for grabs. We will follow what is happening closely over the next few weeks.”

He also opened up about Federer’s fitness which is a bit of a concern since he has not been playing for quite a time but is hopeful that things turn out to be good. He added “What Roger Federer’s form is concerned, the organizers of SwissIndoors are in the dark too. They are in contact with T. Godsick. We also know that he is in training. But only he himself can provide information about his exact condition.”

Roger Federer is a 10-time champion in Basel and the defending champion since the tournament was not held in the last two years. He had defeated Alex de Minaur in the finals of the tournament in 2019. Apart from Federer, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger Aliassime, and Lorenzo Musseti have been also confirmed to play in Basel.
