After missing the whole clay season due to hand surgery, 2nd seed Matteo Berrettini returned for the grass season and had a successful debut. He won the Stuttgart Open, the first competition he participated in upon his comeback. At the Queen’s Club Championships, he won a second championship. Despite finishing second at Wimbledon the previous year, he was forced to retire from the competition this time around after testing positive for COVID-19.

Before turning things around with a victory at the Chile Open, Pedro Martinez’s 2022 season began with a streak of early exits. The Spaniard was eliminated from the Indian Wells tournament in the second round by Cameron Norrie. His finest performance thus far in Miami came at the Miami Open when he defeated the 27th seed Cristian Garin 7-6(2), 6-2, to go to the third round. He did, however, claim his first ATP title earlier this season at the Chile Open and he has so far played well in Gstaad with wins over Carlos Taberner and Elias Ymer.
