Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova is all set to make her debut at the 2023 US Open. She passed the qualification stage and is all set to play in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the very first time. Unfortunately for the teen, she may not be able to enjoy her big breakthrough for long because she was allegedly accused of violating the neutrality policy of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour by the Ukrainian Tennis Federation.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Tennis Federation had tweeted sharing a series of videos that Prozorova had liked. The screen recording displayed over 50 different posts regarding the political events and issues related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Prozorova had been caught liking all those videos and her social media activity had since come under heavy scrutiny.
The WTA Tour had a rigid “neutrality” policy prohibiting players from expressing their views on political issues during the WTA-sponsored Tours. This controversy poses a huge threat to the teen’s 2023 US Open debut as well as her future in the sport. This is very unfortunate for the Russian as she had just qualified for the main draw of the US Open and now her fate resides in the hands of the decision made by the WTA.
Tatiana Prozorova’s social media actions under review
The Ukrainian Tennis Federation has asked the WTA to look into the matter regarding Tatiana Prozorova going against the policy and liking pro-Russian videos and posts. WTA has yet to take action, but if they decide against her, then this action of Prozorova poses a huge threat to her debut and future.
The Russian’s situation highlights the importance of self-awareness off-court. Former Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky shared her views regarding this situation and called Prozorova a “traitor to her country” for supporting Putin.
Tatiana wasn’t the only Russian tennis player targeted by the Ukrainian Tennis Federation. Earlier, another Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva, was accused of liking posts related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but no action was taken towards her by the WTA and this upset some players like Dayana Yastremska. The WTA has not yet decided Prozorova’s future in the sport. Therefore athletes should be extremely careful about their actions both on and off the court.
