Taylor Fritz, current World No.9, was in the limelight for below-par performances for a long time. His fans felt that he is unable to keep up with their expectations, hence the bad run of form in recent competitions. The American saw a disastrous end to his Wimbledon hopes last month after losing to Mikael Ymer. He was having a hard time facing criticisms both on social media and even during his gaming streaming sessions.
So leading up to the Citi Open, he was under a lot of pressure with an urge inside him to perform seriously well. He started his home tournament in fine fashion. Winning the first match very comfortably against Zachary Svajda on straight sets by 6-3, 6-3. With him really looking on form after a long time, he faced a serious task against 4-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray in the round of 16 matchups.
Taylor lost the first set as Murray looked like a replica of his past. But after the start of the second set, it was just a one-man show and Fritz won the match 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. After the match, World No.9 said, “Andy is a legend. It’s an honor to be on court with him. That was a war. At the net, I just said ‘tough one. I’m sorry.’ You have to acknowledge it when you have a match like that and gotta embrace at net. You feel for whoever loses.”
Where does Fritz go on from here?
Fritz was expected by many tennis fans to have unleashed the best version of him this year. But he hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations of his fans leaving them discontent. Having played 18 competitions so far, the American has already lifted two titles. The recent one was the Atlanta Open, which he won after beating the likes of Aleksandar Vukic, Kei Nishikori, and Wu Yibing on the way.
His other title win came at the Delray Beach Open where he beat Miomir Kecmanovic to clinch his first title of the year. Taylor Fritz‘s other recognizable performances were his semi-final finishes at Dallas Open, Mexican Open, Bavarian International, Geneva Open, and Monte-Carlos Masters.
Lastly, he seems to be moving on to the later stages in the majority of the tournaments he has played in. But it hasn’t quite been successful for him when it comes to converting those wins into titles.
