After the quarter-final exit of the US in the Davis Cup, captain Mardy Fish has faced a lot of criticism, especially for the exclusion of doubles specialist Rajeev Ram from the team. Many believe that the inclusion of Ram in the team could have brought a different result. But Taylor Fritz thinks otherwise.

The American star believes it’s easy to point fingers in hindsight. Defending the team selection, Fritz asserted that for Davis Cup the best team was fielded.  The world No 9 in singles was talking to Clay where he shared his views about various issues related to the sport.

“I think that for Davis Cup we brought our best team. Could Rajeev been in that extra spot, because we had an extra spot, like sure, we know he can be there, but that applies pressure to play in if he is there,” Fritz told Clay. Fritz believes that the selected players were best suited for the slow court.

“I genuinely think that on that extremely slow court, Tommy (Paul) and Jack (Sock) was our best option. They didn’t play great, I think there was a lot of pressure on them,” Fritz elaborated.  “It’s very easy in hindsight after defeat to go back and say ‘oh we should have done this and that,” Fritz further added.

Taylor Fritz says he stands by the team’s decision whatever the result

American tennis player Taylor Fritz believes that pointing fingers in hindsight does not serve anyone’s interest. He stands by the team’s decision saying that the result would not have been different. Fritz cited the example of the Australian team which fielded a singles player in a doubles match.

“Australia took out one of their doubles players to put on a single player in a very big doubles match, and they won it. I stand by the team’s decision,” Fritz said. “If we brought Rajeev, I can’t say the result would be any different, to be honest,” he further added.

World No 9 is currently one of the most promising players among the next-gen stars and is touted to win some Grand Slams. Fritz is looking forward to the upcoming season that starts in a couple of days. He will begin his campaign at the United Cup tournament.
