American World No.8 Taylor Fritz opposes Russian World No.3 Daniil Medvedev‘s claim of Shanghai Masters courts being slow and presents his own view on the same. Medvedev earlier said that the courts he played in Beijing and Shanghai are way too different. He also said that Shanghai courts felt slower than the courts of Beijing.
But Fritz tweeted that the difference in Shanghai is not about the speed of the courts but of the difference in the ball used. He wrote on X, “Courts are actually as fast as they always are. The ball we switched to this week is just really slow.”
Earlier Medvedev had said, “It’s not easy to play two tournaments in a row: the balls are different here, the surface is different. Previously, in Shanghai, the courts were among the fastest on the circuit, and now I don’t even know where it is the slowest – here or in Indian Wells. But you can’t do anything about it, I have to play. This season I performed well even on a hard and slow pitch. Now I will try to do it in Shanghai.”
Fritz had earlier brought up the topic of constant changing of the weights of the balls and how it is leading to multiple injuries to players on tour. This is the second time he has put on the focus of this topic.
Taylor Fritz will start against a qualifier in the Shanghai Open
The American World No.8 Taylor Fritz had lost in the US Open quarter-finals against the Serbian World No.1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets. After skipping the Beijing Open, the Shanghai Open is the first tournament the American is playing in. He will face a qualifier here in the first round. The American is also playing doubles this year, teaming up with compatriot Sebastian Korda.
Fritz will be trying his best to qualify for the ATP finals with a decent show in the Shanghai Open. As of now, the current top 4 players have already booked their spots for the Finals- Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Jannik Sinner. The 25-year-old American has a history of making it to the semi-finals in last year’s ATP final.
Fritz has only won one title this year, and that too was in the starting month of the year in the United Cup with his team USA. The American will be trying to play his best tennis and break back into top-5 ratings this year.
