The upcoming 2023 Wimbledon will be extremely important for most of the players on the draw. However, a player that everyone will have their eyes on is American Taylor Fritz. The infamous incident of the American shushing the crowd at the French Open gained immense attention, eliciting a plethora of reactions online.
And now, in an interview with Inews, Fritz opened up about all that had happened in that second-round match against local Arthur Rinderknech in Paris. He said, They literally threw a party every time I missed a 1st serve. I was respectful because I didn’t want to make it worse the whole time. But when it was over, I said, ‘Whatever, if I’m going to take this s**t for 3 hours, I’m allowed to do this.”
It was possibly the loudest home cheer one has seen at the event in a while. Fritz lost the first set, and the home crowd must have expected Rinderknech to seal the match.
However, as the American was making his way back into the match, the crowd got nervous. That energy then translated into them booing every time Fritz missed a shot. They would disturb him just before his second serve.
As Fritz mentioned, he kept his cool to save the situation. However, after his 4-set victory over the Frenchman (2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4), the American decided that it was time for some payback.
He looked at the crowd and signaled them to ‘shut up.’ The crowd did respond to the American’s next match against Fransisco Cerundolo with constant booing. He lost that match and thus would want to make a positive impact in London.
Can Fritz have a deep run in London after his poor grass court warm-up?
Taylor Fritz shot to fame after his long-lasting quarterfinal against Rafael Nadal last year at Wimbledon. The Americans eventually lost the match in five sets, 7-5 in the fifth. However, he won many hearts for his fighting abilities against a top player like Nadal. The question remains: can Fritz have a similar run this time at the Championships? With his results on the warm-up grass court events, one would say that the chances are bleak.
Only two wins in five matches aren’t impressive for someone of his level. He has been seeded ninth in the draw and would love to take advantage of facing relatively easier opponents in the first few rounds. However, he has been handed a tricky German draw. Yannick Hanfmann. One would expect Fritz to win, but it’s tough to guarantee a straight-sets win for the American as Hanfmann can produce some quality tennis.
With that being said, it will be pretty interesting to see how the American will perform at one of the most important Grand Slam tournaments of the year, Wimbledon. Has Taylor Fritz saved his best for Wimbledon? Only time will tell.
