Taylor Fritz got more than he wished for this year. After two trophy-less seasons, the American won three ATP titles this year. This also includes the first ATP 1000 tournament of his career- the Indian Wells Masters 2022. He also played in the prestigious ATP Finals tournament for the first time in his career.

But his biggest success is that his contemporaries, tennis fans, legends, commentators, and media have recognized his talent and potential. In 2022, he reached the last stages of the tournaments. He defeated some of the top seeds in various tournaments played during the year. His incredible performances this year helped him to take the World No.8 spot in the ATP rankings. He finished the year as World No.9.

In a recent interview, he gave his assessment of the 2022 season. “I would say this year worked great for me, I hit all the goals that I set out to achieve. I can be greedy and say I wanted it to be even better, but I really can’t complain with achieving a lot of the things I set out to do this year,” he said.

He also talked about his goals for the new season. “I want to be top five in the world and I want to have a big, deep run at a Grand Slam, maybe make a Grand Slam final. Win, obviously, but make a final. Start there. And I just want to keep playing the tennis I’ve been playing and not put too much pressure on myself. And I’d like to stay healthy, as well,” the World No.9 continued.

The World No.9 thinks that it is now easier for players to win tournaments compared to past seasons. With Roger Federer retiring in 2022, Rafael Nadal injured, and Novak Djokovic denied participation in a few tournaments due to his unvaccinated status against Covid-19, male tennis has opened up. As a result of that, the rise of Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti, and Andrey Rublev has been possible.

Taylor Fritz elaborated more on this in an interview with Clay Tennis Tales. “It’s really tough to say. It depends on the conditions for sure. I’ve never played Rafa in clay courts, but we know is tough as it gets. Federer on faster surfaces. Novak on hard court indoors. Those three are the toughest versions you can get. I wouldn’t say relief, but I definitely feel like as stands right now even, the big titles are so much more winnable than they used to be,” he said.

Taylor Fritz too, won his career’s first ATP Masters tournament by beating Rafael Nadal in the final of the Indian Wells Open 2022. He thinks he can repeat such feats. “I’m more excited cause I feel like getting these titles aren’t as hard as to get as before. The door is already slowly opening a bit more and you can see it: there have been so many more Masters 1000 winners over the past two years than probably ever. When I was 18, or 20 years old, basically only four or five people could get big events,” he continued.

Taylor Fritz must be fancying his chances as he heads to Australia for the first Grand Slam of the season and the United Cup. He will start his 2023 season by playing in the United Cup for Team USA.
