On Saturday (March 30), America’s Danielle Collins experienced something that every athlete doesn’t get to enjoy. It was the crowd’s support when she locked horns with Elena Rybakina in the Miami Open final that left her gobsmacked.

The unseeded Collins denied fourth seed Rybakina the chance to win the title by defeating her in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. That made Collins the lowest-ranked (World No. 53) player to win the title in the history of the tournament.

After her historic campaign, Collins admitted that she had never played in a thrilling environment before, where she got a lot of encouragement from the fans. She even felt as if she was at a Taylor Swift concert.

I see these videos, like at a Taylor Swift concert or other artists and musicians, and it's just incredible the fandom.

Furthermore, the crowd support also gave her faith in humanity. She was mesmerized by how people want to support other people.

I said a few weeks ago, I don't think athletes ever really get to experience that often, something that's so extreme. But today I did, and it was so cool. I will never forget how supportive and encouraging it was.

Collins said she is grateful for the bond and camaraderie she shares with the other tennis players, calling it “rare“. She heaped praise on the women players for supporting her during the time when she underwent endometriosis surgery. The 30-year-old also remembered how she experiences the same kind of excitement when someone from America wins a trophy.

I've also felt the same excitement when I see Jess (Jessica Pegula) pick up a trophy or when Coco (Gauff) won the US Open.

Collins has clinched a Masters 1000 trophy in her farewell season. She is going to retire after 2024. Despite the win in Miami, she has made it clear she won’t make a U-turn on her retirement decision because of a chronic health problem.
