Emma Raducanu has been selected to compete for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup finals in the Scottish city of Glasgow later this month. This has enlivened hopes of the British team after the 19-year-old withdrew from the Transylvania Open due to a wrist injury.

She is now ready to represent her country in the tournament starting November 8. Harriet Dart, Heather Watson and Katie Boulter are the other three players selected for the team event. The 2021 US Open winner was delighted to overcome her injury and represent her nation.

Making my debut for team GB in April was a special moment that I’ll never forget. Stepping out on the court and seeing all the flags flying, all of your team cheering you on, it’s such a unique event that I’m really looking forward to experiencing again.

Having the opportunity to host the finals in your home country doesn’t come around very often so we’ll do everything we can to make our fans proud,” said Raducanu as reported by Express UK.

Great Britain has not won the BJK Cup but they have been runners-up four times. However, with the addition of Raducanu for the final leg of the tournament, the hopes of British fans will be a bit higher as they would look to support them from the stands as well making full use of their home advantage.

Team Great Britain’s Billie Jean King team captain Anne Keothavong said “This is a strong squad for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals and we’re keen to finish the year on a high in front of the passionate crowds in Glasgow.

“All four players have experience in the competition and great memories of playing for GB. We will confirm the fifth team member in the coming weeks, having this competition for places is a great position to be in.”

The Billie Jean King Cup, often known as the BJK Cup, was first introduced as the Federation Cup in 1963 to commemorate the International Tennis Federation’s fiftieth anniversary (ITF). The name was changed in September 2020 to honour former World No. 1 Billie Jean King.

In terms of the number of participating nations, the Billie Jean King Cup is the biggest annual international team sport competition for women in the globe. This team event is considered equivalent to Davis Cup, which is a men’s team event.
