Team Europe has been dealt with a fresh blow, as Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from the Laver Cup just days prior to the event. The three-day tournament is scheduled to be held in Vancouver, Canada for the first time. Team World claimed their first title last year, and they will look to defend their crown this year.
Team Europe will miss several big names in the showpiece event this year. The likes of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are major absentees at the event. Frenchman Arthur Fils has been named as the last-minute replacement, as Stefanos Tsitsipas made a last-minute withdrawal.
Team Europe will be led by Casper Ruud, who is participating in the event for the third time. Andrey Rublev is another big name, with Gael Monfils being the most experienced player in the lineup. Hubert Hurkacz will also participate for Team Europe this year, with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina making his Laver Cup debut as well.
Stefanos Tsitsipas makes late withdrawal from Laver Cup 2023
Holger Rune was the first player to announce his withdrawal, as Stefanos Tsitsipas’ absence would further deplete Team Europe. The Greek tennis star suffered an injury, following the conclusion of the 2023 Davis Cup. He did not have a great outing at the Davis Cup, where he suffered a defeat each in the Singles and a Doubles encounter. The 2023 Australian Open finalist managed to win just one Singles encounter last weekend.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was among the first players to sign up for the 2023 Laver Cup, and he was eagerly waiting for this event. However, an unfortunate injury means that he will have to watch the three-day event from the comfort of his home.
Team Europe will be looking to seek revenge on their shock defeat last year. A star-studded lineup was left stunned by Team World, who went on to claim their first title. Team World will be led by the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, as they have fielded a pretty strong side comparatively.
