“Tennis is an individual sport,” Taylor Fritz blasts ATP’s new off-court coaching regulations
Taylor Fritz in Citi Open 2022
Taylor Fritz is buckling up for his home tournament, US Open which will commence on August 29 but he is not shying away from speaking up when it comes to new coaching rules. Recently, a lot of players expressed their strong opinions on ATP’s off-court coaching rules. If you’re not familiar, ATP began an off-court coaching trial on July 11 and is planning to run it through the US Open till the ATP Finals in Turin.
A lot of top players like Serena Williams and Stefanos Tsitsipas have come under immense scrutiny before for receiving off-court coaching. World No.1 Daniil Medvedev claimed that he is fine with the new regulations but it won’t have a big impact on his game. Medvedev who defeated Taylor Fritz in the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinal, said “It doesn’t change anything for us. Maybe it can work in a match, even if we work so that we talk about everything in training, not to talk about it afterward.”
Taylor Fritz’s disagreement with the off-court coaching rule
World No. 12, Taylor Fritz won the Indian Wells Masters this year, defeating Rafael Nadal in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(5). He’s been performing well all around and is coming into the US Open with great form. Fritz called ATP’S coaching trial, ‘a dumb rule’ saying that it steals the spirit of tennis which ultimately is an individual sport. Taylor Fritz believes, “It’s not something that should be a part of our sport.”
A lot of fans came forward in support of Fritz opinion on this issue. He further said, “Tennis is an individual sport, so why should someone else be able to help you? I think people underestimate how mental and strategic the sport is, so they don’t understand how big of a difference it is. I think that figuring it out yourself on the court is, like, a massive part of our sport.”
The American tennis star claims that he has never received on-court coaching in his professional career. He has been extremely vocal about his problems with the new regulations. Only time will tell how it’ll affect players and the sport in general.
