American tennis player Tennys Sandgren made his digs at Patrick Mouratoglou for ‘stealing’ credit from Brad Gilbert for Coco Gauff’s US Open title. While Gauff did train under the French coach for a short period of time when she was 10 years old, Mouratoglou seemed to be taking credit for her success at the US Open 2023.

In an interview with CNN, Patrick Mouratoglou made comments on how Coco Gauff was as a junior. He talked about how he determined she was the perfect candidate for his academy via a series of matches and tests, which included an interview with the coach himself. The Frenchman also talked about all the achievements the American teen has been accomplishing through her junior years into her years on the tour. He also commented on how Gauff worked under extreme pressure since everyone expected the most out of her.

However, these comments by the Frenchman did not seem to sit well with Tennys Sandgren. CNN had tweeted “Patrick Mouratoglou is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis coaches in history, and his newest star is none other than 19-year-old US Open champion Coco Gauff. As a response to this, Sandgren said, “People starting to understand fake news with this tweet.” Sandgren takes an accusatory tone when stating that Patrick Mouratoglou was stealing credit from Brad Gilbert for Gauff’s game-changing title-winning campaign.

While Mouratoglou might have been Gauff’s coach during her early years, it was Brad Gilbert who led her to her maiden Grand Slam title. The Gilbert-Gauff duo got together only in 2023. Ever since Gauff’s career trajectory has been climbing steeply. 2023 saw Coco Gauff winning both her maiden Grand Slam as well as her first Masters 1000 title at Cincinnati. These statistics alone prove that their duo is indeed a well-oiled machine and it seems unfair to steal credit from her current coach.

Tennys Sandgren defends Novak Djokovic for Davis Cup participation

A particular user on X (formerly called Twitter) had picked out the eligibility criteria for the Paris Olympics 2024. These regulations happened to mention that a player must have made at least two appearances at the Davis Cup to qualify for the Paris games. The X user seemed to accusatorily point out that this was the only reason Novak Djokovic was taking part in the Davis Cup.

At this comment, American Tennys Sandgren jumped in to defend the Serb. “He represented his country just so he could represent his country some more! Yes, ” he tweeted in response. Sandgren defended the 24-time Grand Slam champion by making the point that it was unnecessary to attack a very strong player for doing what he needed to do in order to qualify for one of the biggest sporting events.

The Olympic Games is an elite tournament in which only the best among the best players in that particular sport can take part. While the Serb has done everything to prove that he deserves to represent his country at the games, it is necessary to set up regulations. However, tennis is a predominantly individual sport. The Davis Cup is one of the only other events where the player can represent his country. So it is reasonable to set up the tournament as an eligibility criterion for the Summer games.
