Thanasi Kokkinakis appears to have agreed with Andrew Bogut’s stance against allowing individuals assigned male at birth to participate in women’s sports. Bogut, a former NBA star, has been a vocal critic of transgender women’s participation in women’s sports and recently shared a video of an Italian transgender sprinter winning a women’s race on his Twitter account, renewing his criticism on the matter.

At the Italian Indoor Masters Championship earlier this month, Valentina Petrillo won the 200m race for women aged 50 to 54, securing her eighth championship title. Meanwhile, Andrew Bogut has expressed strong opposition to the idea of a biological male being allowed to play in the NBL1 South, a semi-professional women’s league that includes teams from Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania.

With a thinly-veiled dig at the fact that a transgender athlete was allowed to compete in the race, Andrew Bogut tweeted “Stunning and brave queen,” to which Kokkinakis responded with a laughing emoji and the comment “Seems fair.” Basketball Australia formed a panel last week to review the application of a transgender athlete who wishes to participate in the competition.

The athlete has applied to join Kilsyth, and although the decision would typically fall under the jurisdiction of Basketball Victoria, the national governing body has intervened. Over the weekend, Andrew Bogut posted a screenshot of a message he received from a female AFL player. He cautioned that allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s leagues would fundamentally change the nature of the sport.

Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Miami Open qualifiers

The star Australian who is currently playing the qualifiers had a mediocre season so far. He hasn’t made any special impact except for the one match against Andy Murray in the Australian Open. He just won one title this year, Challenger Manama at Bahrain, and also reached the semis of Adelaide International 2.

However, he was unlucky at times too facing tough draws. Currently, he is playing in the qualifiers of the Miami Open to qualify for the main draw. Kokkinakis, who is also an Australian Open doubles champion in 2022 took a break from men’s doubles. His partner and friend, Nick Kyrgios is currently recovering from the leg injury he suffered in the beginning of the year.

Fans and experts will remember this Australian for his determination and the strong fight he put up against Murray in the marathon second round at Melbourne Park. He recently had been active on social media and made it to the news after calling Elena Rybakina a ‘nice girl’. Tennis fans would want him to qualify for the main round and put up a fight.
