“That appears stupid” Tennis Twitter slams rule disparity as Novak Djokovic goes through while Elena Rybakina fails to secure year-end finals spot despite winning Wimbledon
Elena Rybakina and Novak Djokovic
This year has been an odd one for the sport of tennis as global politics took over for the first time, with the Russia-Ukraine war being a major factor, especially during Wimbledon which barred players from Russia and Belarus from competing due to the conflict.
As a result, ATP and WTA, the men’s and women’s governing bodies for tennis, retaliated the All England and Lawn Tennis Club’s decision by stripping the tournament off all ranking points, effectively making the grand slam an exhibition event for 2022.
Recently, tennis fans on Twitter highlighted how it was unfair for Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina to not qualify for the year-end WTA Finals, despite having won Wimbledon this year while Novak Djokovic qualified based on the ATP rule that a player in the top 20 could get an entry if he had won a major tournament in the same year.
Although Rybakina is in the top 20 currently, she would not qualify for the Tour Finals event since WTA rules are different from that of the ATP where an exemption is in place to allow players from outside the top 8 qualify for the event.
Novak Djokovic might skip Paris Masters to play in ATP Finals
Djokovic is not sure whether he will defend his Paris Masters title this year but his participation in Turin for the World Tour Finals is confirmed, his coach Goran Ivanisevic recently revealed as per Croatian daily Sportske novosti.
Djokovic beat former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev at Paris last year and will lose 1000 points in the rankings in case he opts to play. This will be a further dent to Djokovic’s ranking cause this year as Wimbledon was also not able to provide any ranking points this year due to the ban from ATP.
In fact, there are conjectures in some media quarters that even Rafael Nadal could cut short his 2022 season after recently becoming father for the first time to a baby girl.
