“Not going to happen now or probably by the US Open” Dominic Thiem looking to end the season on a high

Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem, the 28-year-old Austrian enjoyed a good run in Bastad at the Swedish Open, where he beat Emil Ruusuvuori in the round of 32 and Roberto Bautista Agut in the round of 16. His victory run was cut short after he lost the quarter-finals to Argentine Sebastian Baez after a tough match between the two.

Coming back from injuries, Thiem was 0-6 in 2022 and a good run in Bastad will provide him with some much-needed confidence, a wrist injury in the Mallorca Open in June last year put Thiem out of contention for 10 months, and the victory against Ruusuvuori was Thiem’s first ATP level win in 14 months.

Despite losing out in Bastad, Thiem made it clear that he was satisfied and happy with the progress that he has made and is now looking forward to the Gstaad or the Swiss Open, beating Ruusuvuori is sure to have instilled a lot of confidence in the Austrian which he displayed in the next few matches as well and that is something that he will be taking that to the Swiss Open.

Commenting on his run in Bastad, Thiem said, “The win felt very good and it was much needed. The ATP Challenger [Tour] event in Salzburg the week before was also a step in the right direction, with a win there and with a tight loss in the next round. I felt there was a big improvement compared to Roland Garros and the other tournaments.

“Crucially, I was able to back it up in Bastad with two very good wins against two Top 50 opponents, so that was very good and amazing for my confidence. It is way more fun to win some matches and build some momentum and confidence, and that is exactly what I am going to take forward,” added Thiem in his latest interview with the ATP.
