Serena Williams, the former World No 1 and 23-time Grand Slam champion shook the world with her return at the Wimbledon Championship 2022 after a gap of twelve months. She is arguably one of the greatest female tennis players of all time and has been proving her dominance over the last two decades with fierce and powerful attitudes on and off the field. She played a major role in revolutionizing the women’s game of tennis and is an idol to many upcoming talents.
Williams advanced into the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto defeating Nuria Parrizas 6-3,6-4 registering her first singles win since the French Open in 2021. This also marked her first hard-court event since the Australian Open in 2021. The 40-year-old American looked fierce and still going strong even after being in the game for so long. This was also her first singles match after her first-round exit at the All England Club to Harmony Tan. The American has also won 14 major women’s doubles titles along with her sister Venus Williams and their pair is unbeaten in Grand Slam doubles finals.

Serena broke the news regarding her announcement on her social media account on Instagram where appears on the front cover of Vogue magazine which is titled ‘Serena’s Farewell‘. The post was captioned as “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But the countdown has begun.”
She revealed that she will play her final game at the US Open 2022 where she won her first Grand Slam title and also has six US Open singles titles to her name. She also revealed her future plans post-retirement where she desires to spend most of her time with her daughter Olympia and family and discover a new life. She added “I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals, and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.“
Apart from being a tennis player, Serena is an avid businesswoman and has investments in more than 60 startups through her form ‘Serena Ventures‘. She is a board member of Momentive, SurveyMonkey’s parent company, and also joined as an advisor in NFT company Sorare.
Serena won her last Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2017 defeating her sister Venus while she was pregnant. She will be looking for ending her career on a high by winning another Grand Slam title. She will next play at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati where she was the champion for two consecutive years that is in 2014 and 2015.
