“The level is a lot harder right off the bat,” Coco Gauff opens up on a horrendous WTA Finals 2022 campaign

Coco Gauff

The WTA Finals 2022 week could not have gone any worse for American tennis player Coco Gauff. The World No. 4 has suffered five back-to-back defeats across singles and doubles events and is now out of contention to make it to the next stage in both categories. That’s not all, the teenager also lost all three round-robin stage fixtures in the Doubles event, alongside her partner Jessica Pegula.

In the Singles event, Coco Gauff was defeated by Daria Kasatkina in the second round-robin stage fixture, which ended her hopes of making it to the semifinals. The American opened up on the tough week so far, stating that the level of tennis being played was too high. Coco Gauff believes that the format of the tournament had no impact on her poor results, rather it was the quality of her opponents.

“Obviously, when you’re starting off the tournament, you have a tough match opponent right away. But regarding the format and everything, it doesn’t feel too different. But yeah, definitely the level is a lot harder right off the bat,” said Gauff.

As far as the Singles event is concerned, Coco Gauff has failed to win even a single set in both of her fixtures. Speaking after her loss against Daria Kasatkina, the American admitted she was making several unforced errors, which is one of the reasons for her poor week so far.

“I didn’t play my best tennis today, but a lot to take from it, a lot to learn from it, and hopefully do better next time. In both the (singles) matches, I had opportunities. I think I made a lot of unforced errors. So I think that’s something that I will have to clean up,” Gauff admitted.

Coco Gauff will have one last opportunity to end the season with at least a win to her name when she faces World No. 1 Iga Swiatek on Saturday evening. The duo has come up against each other on four occasions so far, with the world number one Pole emerging victorious in all the matches.
