Austrian World No.113 Dominic Thiem has decided to call off his 2022 season after the loss to Russian World No.4 Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Vienna Open. He has played a lot of challenger series this season to climb up the rankings from as low as World No.352. Tennis fans were expecting the Austrian to get a wild card entry at least in the Paris Masters this season, but the hopes are now gone in vain.

This decision also means that the Austrian will have to face some of the top players as early as Round 1 or 2 in the Australian Open 2023, hoping that the wildcard will be given to the former runner-up there. This can make a huge impact in the draw of the ‘Happy Slam’ next year.

The Austrian’s decision to call off the current season was made over Twitter and he is hopeful that he can recharge the batteries for the next year he said that he was glad on his level after coming back from a career-threatening wrist injury. He also didn’t forget the enormous support from his fans, sponsors, and the entire tennis world during difficult times.

Thiem seemed to be coming back to his groove as we witnessed in some of his nail-biting victories in the recent weeks after saving match points against Polish world No.11 Hubert Hurkacz in ATP-250 European Open quarter-finals and American World No.30 Tommy Paul in ATP-500 Vienna Open First round, respectively.

Dominic Thiem was constantly challenging the Big 3 and eventually won his first Grand Slam at the 2020 US Open. However, in a rather unfortunate turn of events, just when he was about to get the recognition he deserved after grinding himself for years, disaster happened in the form of a wrist injury during the Mallorca championships in 2021.

The Grand slam tournaments he played this year ended in first-round losses in both the French Open and US open. Despite the poor run in grand slam matches, he was able to reach the finals of Rennes Challenger 2022 when he eventually lost in straight sets to French World No.106 Ugo Humbert.

Though he lost in the 2nd round in the Metz Open and Tel Aviv Open after that, he was able to reach the semi-finals of the Gijon Open and European Open last week where he lost to Russian World No.8 Andrey Rublev and American World No.36 Sebastian Korda respectively.

Though he lost in straight sets to Medvedev in Vienna Open Round 2, the round 1 victory against Tommy Paul after fighting back from 2 to 5 in the third set and then saving 2 match points in the tie-breaker can give him enough power to his almost dead batteries. The Tennis world is expecting the Austrian to get enough rest and come back with a bang in the 2023 season.
