World No. 37 Nick Kyrgios and World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will be clashing in the second round of the ongoing 2022 Montreal Masters in Canada with both players coming fresh from a title in the last week. While Medvedev won the ATP-250 title in Los Cabos in Mexico, Kyrgios brought home the ATP-500 title in Washington, his first Tour singles title since 2019 and second in Washington.

In Canada, Medvedev had a first-round bye being the top seed while Kyrgios battled past Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-4 to win his 7th singles match on the trot. The Australian is in great form having won two back-to-back doubles titles, with Thanasi Kokkinakis in Atlanta and then with Jack Sock in Washington making a sweep in the American capital.

“I’m happy that I’m giving everyone what they want: Kyrgios vs Medvedev”: Nick Kyrgios

Kyrgios and Medvedev will meet for the 4th time on the Tour and for the second time this year. Kyrgios won the first two meetings, which included defeating the Russian in the finals of the 2019 Washington Open. Medvedev won his first match against the Australian in his backyard as he won their 2nd round meeting in the 2022 Australian Open on his way to a runner-up finish.

“I’m happy that I’m giving everyone what they want: Kyrgios v. Medvedev, second round. It’s going to be hard, that’s for sure. I know physically and mentally I’m not as fresh as I would like. But he also came off a title last week in Los Cabos. He’s going to be feeling a little bit tired, too — I hope. But I’m going to do everything right. I’m going to get a good rest tonight, good physio, and I’m just going to give it my best shot. I’m going to go out there and have fun and try and play the best I can.

“Physically I feel fine. Mentally just so tired. I haven’t had much sleep the past couple of days, but I am trying to put that behind me already. I am in Montreal and I haven’t played great tennis in Montreal in the past, so I wanted to come out here today and get that match up against Medvedev next. It will be a lot of fun. I just want to create some good memories in Montreal.

“Medvedev is coming from a title too and he is the number 1 in the world. It’s not like the rankings mean too much as the guy I played today is ranked ahead of me. But Medvedev is a machine. Medvedev is a hell of a player. His style is so unorthodox, he is a great competitor and he is just an animal. I am looking forward to seeing where I am at. It’s not a bad result if you lose to Medvedev. Most of the world does,” said Kyrgios after winning against Baez.
