21-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the upcoming Davis Cup Finals group stage in Malaga which will begin on September 13. Djokovic, who hasn’t played a single competitive tournament since winning Wimbledon, was scheduled to play in the Davis Cup but recently, Serbian captain Viktor Troicki confirmed that Djokovic won’t be competing at the Davis Cup this year.

Djokovic has had a very weird year which had its own shares of ups and downs. He started the year on a very bad note when he was deported from Australia due to his vaccination status and hence wasn’t allowed to defend his Australian Open title. He wasn’t able to play the Golden swing either due to the very same reason and had a late start to his season.

He then had a decent clay season where he won the Rome Masters but ended up losing to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of the French Open. His highlight of the season was winning his 7th Wimbledon title and inching closer to Nadal on the all-time list.

Troicki, who is the captain of the Serbian Davis Cup team, told Sportski Zurnal that Djokovic won’t be playing in the Davis Cup due to personal reasons. He further defended him by saying that Djokovic has been there for the national team many times but next week, he won’t be able to play. He also said that if Serbia reaches the business end of the tournament, Djokovic may join the team.

“He won’t play due to personal reasons. He was there for the national team countless times, but this time he can’t. If we make it to Malaga, he will join us,” Troicki said.

Djokovic will now either play the Final matches of the Davis Cup Finals or directly be seen at the Laver Cup in a couple of weeks’ time. He will then travel to Israel to play at Tel Aviv Open and then head towards Japan to play the ATP 500 event in Tokyo. He will then start his indoor hard court stint in Vienna before playing the Paris Masters and eventually the ATP Finals.
