Jim Courier, a former tennis player, reckons Daniil Medvedev has “something magical” about him and calls him “authentic.” Medvedev and Courier, a four-time Grand Slam champion, made headlines in January when the Russian requested that the fans “show some respect” for Courier during a tense post-match interview after his win over Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open.

Afterwards, Daniil Medvedev sensationally hit out at Australian Open fans who booed him throughout his second-round win over Nick Kyrgios, insisting the jeerers have a ‘low IQ.’ He said, “That’s just disappointing because… it’s not everybody that’s doing it but the people doing it probably have a low IQ.”

Reflecting on the frosty interview, Courier told The Age: “Those post-match moments with the players, where they can showcase who they are, when the mask drops for a second, are so vital for the sport. And not everyone wants to be loved by everyone. Medvedev is perfectly fine if people don’t like him. But I kind of love it about him because he’s just authentic, he’s not polished, not media trained. He’s just going to let you know what he’s thinking and there’s something magical about that.”
