“They are going to be serious contenders” Rick Macci believes Serena Williams and Venus Williams will play doubles for a lot longer than we think

Serena Williams and Venus Williams will be playing their US Open first-round doubles match on Thursday against Linda Nosková and Lucie Hradecka. Serena Williams has already announced this month that she’ll be bidding goodbye to her singles career after the US Open ends. But the sisters have also been dominant when it comes to doubles tournaments. They hold a 14-0 record in Grand Slam doubles finals.
While Serena Williams is now preparing for her third-round singles match against Ajla Tomljanović, her sister is there every step of the way to show her support. Venus Williams suffered a first-round loss to Alison Van Uytvanck but she is all ready to play doubles with her sister at the prestigious US Open. Their childhood coach, Rick Macci recently gave his remarks on how long we can expect the sisters to stay in action.
I think we shall see them play doubles, and possibly mixed doubles: Rick Macci on Venus Williams and Serena Williams’ doubles career
Rick Macci has been coaching Venus Williams and Serena Williams since they were only 10 and 9 respectively. Macci believes the sisters are going to play doubles tournaments for a little while longer. He said, “Serena’s is a great story. It all started in the US Open for her and it’s going to end here. But I believe it’s just from singles!”
He further added, “But this is not going to be the end for her and Venus. I think they will play doubles for the next 2-3 years. You are just going to cover half the court. Serve, they got. Return, they got. The shots, they got. They are going to be serious contenders. I think they will play doubles. The public love them. They got this amazing brand, and what better way than to continue to change lives and play tennis? I think we shall see them play doubles, and possibly mixed doubles.”
Macci then commented on his disbelief over how far the sisters have come. “I saw how she was wired at a young age but to go on to win 23 Grand slams, 6 US Opens, 6 Australian Opens, 3 French, 14 Grand Slam in doubles with Venus; they never lost, and four (Olympic) gold medals. They could have 50 grand slam doubles, 50 mixed doubles but hey, they had to eat and sleep. You just can’t keep playing! But I do believe now both sisters will play doubles,” said Rick Macci.
