23rd seed in Men’s Singles at the 2022 US Open, Nick Kyrgios confirmed his spot in the second week of the Grand Slam with a straight-set win over J.J. Wolf in the third round. Kyrgios won the match 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 on the Louis Armstrong Stadium and although packed, the stadium had its sight on the Arthur Ashe Stadium where Serena Williams was engaged in battle with Ajla Tomljanovic.

Tomljanovic won the highly exciting clash taking a 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-1 win and retiring the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena who had announced that this year’s US Open will be the final tournament of her career. Serena and Ajla put on a great show with the match going past the 3-hour mark, the only time Serena has played for over 3 hours in the Flushing Meadows. Serena saved 5 match points but it was Ajla who eventually won the match.

Kyrgios after his win over Wolf was asked about Serena yet again despite the Australian calling him GOAT in his last press conference. Kyrgios did not change his stance and was all respectful towards the former World No. 1 who has decided to conclude her tennis career 27 years after she turned Pro.

“She’s got a career that I think no one else will emulate. You got a couple on the men’s side who are trying to catch her at Grand Slams but Nadal, Serena, Federer and Novak, these are once-in-a-generation athletes and I would never put my name in the same category. It’s a special moment for her and she played extremely well, she won two matches and nearly got on top of the third one. That’s a hell of a way to go out and I just appreciate what she has done and I am sure everyone in this building does as well,” said Kyrgios.

While Serena bows out with the defeat to Ajla, Kyrgios will take on defending champion and World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round promising a mouth-watering clash.
