2022 turned out to be a pretty emotional year for tennis fans. Two of the greatest tennis players of all-time, Roger Federer and Serena Williams retired from the sport, after having graced the courts for well over two decades. Serena Williams played her final professional match at the US Open 2022, whereas, Roger Federer paired with Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup.

US Open junior champion, Alex Eala has opined on the retirement of the two modern-day greats. Ranked 219th in the world, the youngster has already made the headlines back in Philippines. She also appeared on the cover of the Vogue Magazine in her home country in November.

Alex Eala believes that Roger Federer and Serena Williams will have to move on with their lives post-retirement. Moreover, she believes that the retirement of the duo will open up space for future stars. However, Alex Eala asserted that the two players will always serve as an inspiration for the younger generation.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams are two of the most decorated players in the Open Era. Alex Eala stated that the duo have been around forever, and have paved the way for budding tennis stars.

“These people paved the way for so many other young tennis players and young athletes. It feels like they’ve been here forever, and it feels like they can go on and on but it’s just a reminder that they’re human beings too, you know. No matter what they’ve done for the sport, they have to move on with their lives. I think that leaves room for the next generation to naturally climb the leaderboards. And they remain an inspiration for the following generations,” said Alex Eala.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams have both struggled to remain consistent on the tour over the past couple of years. The Swiss maestro claimed his last major title at the Australian Open in 2018. On the other hand, Serena Williams’ last triumph came at the Australian Open in 2017. The American came close to winning her 24th major title on several occasions, however, she never quite managed to claim another Grand Slam.
