Serbian great Novak Djokovic celebrated his return to Melbourne in style. The 21-time Grand Slam champion defeated Roberto Carballés Baena in the first round of the Australian Open to extend his unbeaten record on Australian soil. The victory follows Djokovic’s emotional reaction to last year’s infamous deportation saga.
The 35-year-old started the tournament as the biggest favorite. His loyal fans in Australia cheered for him in every shot under the closed roof at Rod Laver Arena. Djokovic also thanked them from the heart for their round-the-clock support after his return to Australia.
“Unbelievable atmosphere,” Djokovic exclaimed on the court after the match. “Thank you for giving me such a welcoming reception I could only dream of,” he added. “I really feel very happy that I’m back in Australia and back here on the court where I’ve had the biggest success in my career,” the nine-time Australian Open champion continued.
In addition to the fans, Djokovic also acknowledged the role of his family members, some of whom came for the first time since Djokovic clinched his maiden Grand Slam title in 2008. “My parents and my brother are here after 15 yeast, they were last here when I won in 2008, my first Slam, so hopefully they bring me luck once again,” Djokovic expressed.
Novak Djokovic loves Rod Laver Arena more than any other court

Afterward, Novak Djokovic could not contain his love for the Rod Laver Arena where he has won 22 consecutive matches. “I really feel very happy that I’m back in Australia, back here on the court where I had the biggest success in my career,” said Djokovic. “This court is the most special court in my life, and I couldn’t ask for a better start to the tournament,” Continuing his train of thoughts, he further continued.
Djokovic also acknowledged how the Arena makes him feel more confident and comfortable. “I guess the more you win on a certain court, the more confident and comfortable you feel every next time you step on it,” the 35-year-old expressed. He also believes the night session match on the Arena further strengthens his game.
With the victory in the first round over the World No. 75, Djokovic extended his unbeaten run in Australia to 35. On the quest to lift the 10th trophy in Melbourne Park, Djokovic was in total control despite having a hamstring scare. This may be just a glimpse of the grand exploits on the way for Djokovic during the fortnight of the Australian Open.
