Iga Swiatek is a professional tennis player who comes from Poland. She is currently ranked world No. 1 by the WTA. Swiatek has won French Open on two occasions in her career in 2020 and 2022. After winning her first major in 2020, she became the first player representing Poland to win a major singles title. She is the youngest women’s singles major winner since Maria Sharapova in 2004.

Swiatek’s win against Gabriela Lee in the Poland Open’s round of 16 extended her winning streak to 18 on the clay surface which listed her among some elite names who have won most matches in a row on clay. The 21 years old is known mostly for her brilliance on clay but this season she has shown her dominance on hardcourts as well turning into a good all-surface player.

The Polish international has been knocked out of the Poland Open which ended her dream to win a title at her home tournament. Swiatek was defeated by Caroline Garcia in the quarter-finals by 1-6, 6-1, 4-6. The two-time majors winner started off the game by poor performance in the first set, losing out by one game to six but made a comeback after dominantly winning the second set, however she didn’t keep up the same momentum in third set and lost the set which ended her unbeaten streak on clay.

Swiatek after the loss, came to address the press conference where she said, “It’s nice that even after a loss, they are pretty supportive. And, you know, I was hoping also I’m going to play more matches here, but it’s sport, you know, it happens. So hopefully people are going to understand and as you said, still remember that we have many more chances in season”

The world No.1 will also be seen playing in the US Open which will begin on 29th  August and conclude on 13th September. This year’s French Open champion Swiatek will look to have two majors on her name in a calendar year but this time the Pole will have to prove herself on the hard court.
