Carlos Alcaraz can’t be prevented, it seems. In a long semi-final duel at the Madrid Open, the 19-year-old Spaniard upset World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to reach the Masters 1000 final. Alcaraz defeated Djokovic 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 in a match that lasted three hours and thirty minutes. After defeating Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in back-to-back matches, Carlos Alcaraz became the first man to reach the final of a clay-court championship.
Also, he is the youngest ever Madrid Open finalist and the only player to defeat Nadal and Djokovic in consecutive matches on clay. Alcaraz, who is touted to be the next big thing in men’s singles tennis, only defeated Nadal in a 3-set battle in the men’s singles quarter-final on Friday and is going to square off against either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alexander Zverev in the final showdown.

After both players had warmed up on the court, the Serb began the match with his serve. With a 40-30 lead in the first game, Alcaraz broke Djokovic’s first service game to take the set. He then won his service game, giving him a two-point lead over Novak Djokovic. The World No. 1 then opened his account by winning his second service game with only a single point conceded, and he ultimately got his maiden break when he won the eighth game against Alcaraz to equalise the score.
Shortly afterwards, Alcaraz won his service game to take the first set into a tie-breaker. This is when the rally between the two happened which was pretty mesmerising. The rally lasted over 15 shots and it was the young Spaniard who produced a wonderful drop shot to seal the final deal. However, it was Djokovic who clinched the tie-breaker to defeat Alcaraz in the first set.
In the second set, Both the players won their respective service games and were going neck-to-neck. After battling for a long time, The teenager finally got a break in the 12th game to clinch the second set against Djokovic. However, in the deciding set, Carlos Alcaraz looked the more threatening player, with Djokovic fending off break points breaks in three of his service games. At 5-5, the Spaniard let a match point slip away, but the game went to a tie-breaker, and Alcaraz didn’t let it slide away this time, holding on for a lengthy three-hour, 35-minute win.
