Former British tennis ace Tim Henman has issued a warning for Emma Raducanu and her fans as the excitement builds over the former US Open champion’s comeback. As Raducanu prepares to return to action with the Auckland Open in January, Henman wants the 21-year-old to be a bit cautious.
He wants Raducanu to look to survive for the first few tournaments and remain injury-free. Henman also asked the Briton’s fans to manage their expectations as she has been out of the tour for a long time.
Tim Henman highlighted the importance of patience for Emma Raducanu and her fans. He believes that while Raducanu has all the talent, she just needs to be patient with herself.
So for me, from, let's say, the first three, four months of the year, I think if she could stay injury-free and play a whole series of tournaments without any setbacks, I think that would be fantastic because there is no doubt about her ability. I think patience is a really important word for Raducanu herself, but also all the people that are excited to see her come back.Tim Henman told Eurosport.
Notably, Emma Raducanu announced that she will play in the WTA 250 event in New Zealand that runs from January 1-7. The 21-year-old accepted a wildcard entry into the tournament as she has set her eyes on the bigger prize i.e. the 2024 Australian Open.
Tim Henman bestows his faith in Emma Raducanu
Although Tim Henman warned Emma Raducanu and her fans about being too excited for her return, he himself is excited and wants to see the young Briton have a great season in 2024. Henman bestowed faith in Raducanu and backed her to make a good future for herself.
She's 21 years of age. She's got the next ten years in front of her. She just needs to build that foundation so that she can get out on tour and compete and show the undeniable talents that she has.Tim Henman said.
Henman also addressed the talks around Raducanu potentially needing to play the qualifiers at the Grand Slam tournaments. The 49-year-old said that these things should not bother Raducanu and that her prime focus should be on staying active on the tour and injury-free.
The former British ace would not mind seeing Raducanu playing smaller WTA events and even in challenger tournaments. Henman just wants Raducanu to not go off the court for a long time.
