American tennis star Tommy Paul had a forgettable outing in his first-round match at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco as he lost to Jack Draper. The 26-year-old was defeated in straight sets by the British No. 3. Draper proved too hot to handle for Paul who got a bagel in the first set. Although he fought back in the second set, Draper won the match 6-0, 6-4.
With this win, Draper avenged his defeat in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open. Meanwhile, Tommy Paul faced criticism for his mediocre performance. Fans bashed the American ace for not standing to the occasion and losing to World No. 50.

It is worth mentioning that Paul trails against Draper 1-3 in the head-to-head record. The only win the American has managed over his British counterpart came at the 2024 Australian Open. Despite being ranked higher than Draper, Paul has not been able to trouble his opponent enough.
This defeat in Acapulco further raised eyebrows about the level of tennis Paul plays. Tennis fans criticized the 26-year-old saying he is underwhelming. A user even dragged Ben Shelton and claimed that American tennis players play like a**.

A season of highs and lows for Tommy Paul so far
The 2024 season has been an interesting one for Tommy Paul who has won one title, reached a final, and has had a first-round exit. Paul started his season with a quarterfinal qualification at Adelaide International but was ousted from the ATP 250 event after a defeat to Jack Draper.

At the 2024 Australian Open, Paul survived till the third round but could not go past Miomir Kecmanovic. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old upped his game in the next two tournaments he played.
Paul reached the final in the Dallas Open as well as the Delray Becah Open. While he converted it into a title in Dallas, Paul could not break Taylor Fritz in the Delray Beach final.
The American was expected to fare well in Acapulco but an anticlimax awaited the World No. 14. Paul had no answers to an improved Draper who fired winners with ease. The American lost the match in an hour and 26 minutes.
