Iga Swiatek opens up about war-torn Ukraine

Iga Swiatek started off her US Open campaign with a bang, she faced Jasmine Paolini in the first set of the tournament and Sloane Stephens in the second round both of the matches she won in straight sets. Swiatek looks to be in sublime form as she has made her way into the third round of the tournament at the Flushing Meadows.
In a press conference, Iga Swiatek talked about the situation between Russian and Ukrainian players and how it affects the mood, she said, “Well, basically I think it’s already too late. I mean, it’s never too late, you know. But I think the best time for ATP or WTA to do anything was when the war started, and where the tension was pretty big, I mean, in the locker rooms, you know. I think right now it’s already pretty messed up.“
“Even though there are countries who are invading other countries, we are tennis players. It’s sad but it’s not our fault that it’s happening, you know. Yeah, I think it would be much, much easier at the beginning to do that. Right now, yeah, right now it’s kind of too late, I think, to fix that,” Swiatek added further.
After making it into the third round of the US Open, world number 1 Iga Swiatek will be going up against American professional Lauren Davis.
