Top seed Iga Swiatek congratulates Elena Rybakina and her team on the huge win at Wimbledon

Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan won her first-ever Grand Slam title after defeating Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in 3-6,6-2,6-2 on Saturday at Wimbledon 2022, the first player from her country to ever win a Grand Slam singles title. She lost in the first set but came back stronger in the next two sets with a lot of calmness and making no mistakes in losing any set to her opponent. She celebrated her win with a fist pump and smile in her typical demeanour.

It was a dream come true moment for the young champion. She played one of her best games and with her big serves as she ended Jabeur’s 12-match winning streak. After her win, she climbed over the front-row wall to make the trek through the stands to meet her team, friends and family with celebratory hugs. This was the first women’s title match since 1962 where both players were making their debuts at the final.

Elena Rybakina was quite nervous before the match but didn’t let that get into her head much and she played her best game today. She is sure everyone at Kazakhstan would be proud of her feat and she thanked the President of the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation for the support.

With the whole tennis community congratulating Rybakina, current World No. 1 on the WTA Tour, Iga Swiatek also wished the 23-year-old for joining her in the Grand Slam winner’s club. Swiatek lost in the third round to Alize Cornet ending her 37-match winning streak and despite being a title favourite, did not hesitate from wishing the champion and tweeted, “Huge congrats to you Elena and to your team! Amazing tournament.”
