World No. 10 and the 8th seeded Ons Jabeur moves into her second WTA-1000 event semi-final as she defeats former World No. 1 Simona Halep 6-3, 5-2 in 1 hour and 8 minutes in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Madrid Open. The win takes Ons into her second semi-final of the season having earlier finished as the runner-up at the 2022 Charleston Open.
It was the fourth meeting between the two players with Simona winning the last two matches. This win however levels the head-to-head at 2-2. Halep had been in good form coming into the match with victories over top-seed Paula Badosa and American teen sensation Coco Gauff in the previous two rounds but Ons proved too good for the Romanian.
Ons had 2 aces, 1 double fault and by converting 4 out of her 5 breakpoints as she ended the match with 66 points to her name. As for Simona, she had 1 ace, 1 double fault and converted only 1 out of her 4 breakpoint opportunities to end her campaign in Madrid with 45 points to bow out of the tournament and confirm that the Madrid Open will have a first-time champion this year.
“Winning against Simona today was a mandatory part that I had to go through to achieve the goals that I told you about. Why not be Top 5 and win more titles? So I’m glad that I succeeded in this test, but the tournament is not over yet,” said Jabeur after her win over the former World No. 1.
Ons Jabeur awaits her semi-final opponent

With Ons and Simona playing the first quarter-final, the Tunisian will have to wait to know her semi-final opponent. The winner from the clash between Amanda Anisimova and Ekaterina Alexandrova will take on Ons who is still hunting her first WTA-1000 finals appearances. Jabeur’s qualification into the semi-finals of the 2021 Indian Wells Open remains her best result in the top-tier of the WTA Tour which has now been matched after her win over Halep.
