Stefanos Tsitsipas faced off against Daniil Medvedev in the Semifinals of the 2023 Italian Open. The Greek player started a fresh controversy during the game. Stefanos Tsitsipas was seen asking his own mother to leave the stadium.
This incident was quite controversial but the reason behind it might be genious. Apparently, Tsitsipas’s mother was speaking in Russian, and Daniil Medvedev, being a Russian could understand it. The match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev was interrupted by rain two times. Medvedev came out victorious after almost 2 hours of play to reach his maiden Italian Open Final.
After losing the first set Tsitsipas was seen talking in his box aggressively. Some moments later his mother left and sat on a different seat.
According to the commentator, Tsitsipas was angry with his mother for speaking in Russian. “Tsitsipas I’m told was actually telling his mum not to talk in Russian at the sit-down so that Medvedev of course doesn’t hear it. I’ve also just been told that he has told his dad that mum needs to leave the stadium.”, said the commentator Nick Lester.
The Tennis Letter shared a post about this incident on Twitter saying,” Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mom has left his box in Rome. Apparently, he asked her to stop speaking Russian because Daniil Medvedev can understand it. Chess moves”. Tsitsipas’s mother Julia Apostoli is a former tennis professional. She was born in Moscow and represented Russia and Greece. His father is also a former tennis player and a current coach.
Stefanos Tsitsipas on tennis bringing a lot of suffering to players
Stefanos Tsitsipas, back in April, said that there is more ‘suffering’ in tennis than pleasure. He expressed that while a player’s victory brings a lot of joy, the defeats are often devastating.
“I’d definitely tell them there’s more suffering in this sport than pleasure. Pleasure is there on the court but it’s also going to be painful, dealing with losses and defeats,”; “It’s important to be mature with your defeats, learn from them, and move on. And always stay humble with your wins. Always have your friends and family near you, to be able to live through that journey together and to have a good time,”, he said in an interview with the The New York Times.
He talked about how players should deal with losses and advised aspiring youth players. He also added that Tennis is a very difficult sport and especially hard for those who cannot afford it.
