TV Presenter gets suspended for supporting Daria Kasatkina and Andrey Rublev’s interview discussing the shortcomings of Russia
Andrey Rublev, Sofya Tartakova and Daria Kasatkina
Andrey Rublev and Daria Kasatkina were recently interviewed by Russian Youtuber Vitya Kravchenko in which both of the tennis players from Russia discussed several topics from the war in Ukraine to many things which are considered as ‘taboo’ back home. In the interview, Rublev hinted at a possible change of citizenship if the bans continue. The interview got more than 250,000 views after it was uploaded on YouTube.
Rublev said, “Speaking about access to Wimbledon, it would be acceptable to change the passport. Participation would be allowed then. If we are banned from all tournaments and I want to continue a sports career then, yes, that would be one of the options.”
“They poured s**t on my players”: Sofya Tartakov in support of Andrey Rublev and Daria Kasatkina
One of Russia’s top TV presenters, Sofya Tartakov of Match TV (a national sports channel) was suspended from her position after she spoke against the criticism Rublev and Kasatkina had received on a show named ‘There is a theme’ which aired on Match TV for their interview with Vitya which went viral in Russia. Sofya has links to the tennis federation which allows her access to many big players in Russia.
“For a whole hour on the air of a TV channel that I have been working with since its launch, they poured s**t on my players, Daria Kasatkina and Andrey Rublev,” said Tartakova, who also acts as their public relations officer. “I congratulate my home network. In one hour, the channel lost exclusive access and interviews with some of the world’s top players.”
Kasatkina’s situation is rather trickier mainly after the Russian player came out as gay in the same interview. Homosexualism is pretty much banned in all of Russia. The country banned ‘promotion’ of such activities in 2013 where they also made a law for stopping any gay pride events and detaining activists. There have been indications that it would be legally banned completely in the future.
She also hinted at changing nationality, “Our federation went out of existence for the International Tennis Federation. The world championship was taken away from us. Things are up in the air with the Olympics. Passport change? We’ll see.”
